Biggest Newbie Writer Mistake, Not Using ‘Said’ Enough

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

For all you new authors out there there is one book that I consider invaluable: ‘Self Editing for Fiction Writers. How to Edit Yourself Into Print‘ by Renni Browne and Dave King. Get it from the library or buy it, or steal it, whichever, just go read it.* Now! Go, what are you waiting for? (okay so maybe finish reading this post first but then go!)

One of the most interesting things I found in this book, — which totally threw me for a loop by the way  was their section on the word ‘said’. A newbie writer will try to find any other word for dialogue. Using flowery and descriptive words to communicate how the character is speaking. Doing this screams amateur. Both authors of this book are senior editors and they definitely have first hand experience with this. Most of the time if a reader can’t tell how something is said by the actual dialogue, the words your characters are using aren’t strong enough or specific enough. The words you use and how you use them should say exactly how that character is feeling.
Said is unobtrusive and as such the eyes tend to skip over and simply understand, therefore leaping ahead to get to the good stuff. When an author uses a word like grimaced, the eyes won’t pass over it as easily. This happens most especially when the verb used all of sudden changes what the dialogue was supposed to do.

For example:
“I really truly love you. You know that?” he said.

Shows how a man might say this to a woman.

“I love you” he screamed.

Throws the reader off. You don’t how or why a man would scream something like that.
Use said. Use said. Use said.
I could keep talking about this for a very long time, but I don’t want to take away any of the time you could be using to read this fabulous book.
As Renni Browne and Dave King said:
“You want your readers to pay attention to your dialogue, not the means by which you get it to them.”

Keep on writing, keep on reading and keep on editing!
*okay, so don’t actually steal it. 😛 As authors we want to support other authors and buy their books right? 😀

Grateful for New Writing Friends

So as of Jan 5, 2012 (when I actually pay the membership fee) I am a full-fledged ifwit. A member of IFWA – The Imaginative Fiction Writers Association. I went to my first meeting last week. I am so glad I found this group!

I’ve been writing and working on my novel for 3+ years. It wasn’t until this past spring that I actually met some other writers. What a lonely and isolating writing existence it had been. For the longest time I was the only one I knew in Calgary who was writing a novel. To meet such a number of established and talented writers was exhilarating. It was a thrill to be able to talk to people who understand my qualms, my struggles, my insecurities and my shared love of all things speculative (sci-fi, fantasy, ghosts, etc).

Needless to say I feel like this group will probably be a great fit for me. I’m already looking forward to the different workshops and events they have planned. Just to have people to bounce ideas off of, and other writers who are willing to read and help critique my work is a wonderful privilege. It will help me so much to hone my craft.

With the amazing programs that the Calgary Public Library has to offer writers, plus a great ‘Open Mic Night’ done through Alexandra Writers Centre and the awesome Ifwits, I really feel like I’m coming into my own as a writer.

Here’s to finding others who not only understand your passion, but share it.

Awesome Feedback

I went to the Alexandra Writers’ Open Mic night last night and had a fantabulous time. I heard some excellent reading and laughed and enjoyed the whole night. I loved meeting other local writers. They draw random names for people to read. My name was drawn!

I read three pages from the end of Chapt 1. It really got me back into my book again to be able to read it aloud. I was so happy to get such good feedback. I loved hearing the comments that people didn’t want me to stop reading.

I’m definitely going to continue to go every month. It’s wonderful to know you’re not the only writer in all of Calgary, like I’ve been feeling the last little while.

Now to get back to work polishing up Lasera!

Cheers!

Short Hiatus

As stated on my DanielleWAM blog:

So I started training as a school bus driver today which was pretty interesting. But as training will be about 9 hours each day Mon through Friday for the next two weeks at least, I’m going to take a short hiatus from my blogs. I’ll be back up again on Aug 27th the new deadline for sending out queries. Hopefully in the short amount of time I have in the evenings and on the weekends I can get my fill of time with my son and my husband and work on polishing my novel. Till then.

Deadline pushed back….. Boo!

So I will be starting training to be a school bus driver on the 10th of Aug. Needlessly to say that makes my next week full of studying/preparing for said training. Therefore it’s only right that I send off the queries after I’ve had sufficient time to make sure my manuscript is exactly where I want it to be. I really really wanted to meet my deadline of Aug 11 though (which would’ve been exactly 3 years since I had the idea) ‘Boo’ on the lack of time until then. >> I might still be able to make this deadline, but it all depends on my beta readers and how soon I’m able to get the info I need about what diving is like for teens in Canada right now. As of right now the deadline is set for Aug 27th, but I still want to push for Aug 11th. Wish me luck!
